End of Session Prep List

Middle School, Session 1. Fellow Travelers Festival: Wednesday, October 7. Last day of session: Thursday, October 8.

Tick things off as you finish them. Your ticks are saved on this computer only, so use the same one each time.

Your Hero Board

Your board is finished and attached permanently by the end of the Quest block on Tuesday Oct 6. The Festival is Wednesday Oct 7. Until Tuesday nothing is glued or taped down.

Must be on the board

• Your coloring portrait, colored in, with your speech bubbles
• Your printed, greenlit Hero's Essay with the green checkmark in the top right corner
• One to three highlighted quotations from your Hero's Essay
• Your Friendship Strategy for Life (the revised draft you have on Wednesday)
• One to three highlighted quotations or key ideas from your Friendship Strategy
• Friendship Standards: your three characteristics under that heading
• My Friendship Toolkit: five tools ranked, with the star, the circle and the underline
• Your Friendship Commitment: one person's name and your finished sentence
• Your Hero Collage
• Your Monster: the drawing, its elixir and your 200 words
• Your Human Needs and Love Language rankings
• Your Friendship Mind Map

Your choice: the clues you collected

Keep the ones that help a visitor understand you. Leave off anything that was only ever a clue for you.

• Three gifts, three flow experiences, one opportunity or injustice
• Three fears and three goals
• Three reasons friends make life better, each with a phrase or image
• One thing you learned about a fellow traveler in Friendship Bingo
• Your Big Five summary and one insight (only if you are comfortable sharing it)
• Your Acts of True Friendship chart (only if you are comfortable sharing it)

The test before you glue

A visitor with three minutes at your board should walk away knowing four things: who you are, what you value, the friendships you hope to build, and the kind of fellow traveler you hope to become. Give another Hero a full tour on Tuesday, take their warm and cool feedback, then make your final changes.

Your Hero's Essay

Every essay is greenlit, printed and on display before the Festival. Greenlighting was Tuesday Sep 29. If yours came back with a red X, fix it and get it greenlit again this week.

The essay has all five sections

• A Launch: an opening that grabs the reader and sounds like you
• Who Am I? Your gifts, your beliefs, how people describe you
• Who Do I Want to Become? Your heroes, your goals for this year, what you never want to do
• What Do I Promise to Change and What Will I Hold Sacred?
• A Call to Action: the question you leave your reader with, or what you ask them to do

The essay is ready for an audience

• Greenlit by a Hero outside your Squad
• Clear message, complete, your best effort
• No significant spelling, grammar or formatting errors
• Printed, with a large green checkmark in the top right corner
• One sentence, phrase, promise or insight from it chosen for your Hero Board

If you are reading at the Celebration

• Practice reading it aloud at least twice, standing, at the pace you will use on Wednesday
• Bring a clean printed copy to read from

Other

Secret Friend

• A gift for your Secret Friend, bought or made, finished by the pilot on Thursday Oct 1
• A letter to them naming the qualities you admire and why you chose this gift
• Both wrapped or sealed and kept secret until the Reveal at the Celebration

Festival day

• Wristbands on: blue on your right wrist, red on your left
• Know your job and be at your station when visitors arrive
• Give any visitor a three-minute tour of your board and answer their questions
• Help restore the studio when the Festival ends

Festival jobs from the planning committee

Studio jobs still to be assigned: tables for the boards, the Habits list posted where visitors read it before meeting Heroes, and the visitor guide.

Friendship Strategy for Life

• Rough draft complete by Monday Oct 5
• Written critique exchanged Tuesday Oct 6
• Revised draft on your board Wednesday Oct 7
• Final revision, greenlight and publication Thursday Oct 8

End of session, Thursday Oct 8

• Take the Friendship Survey a second time
• Quest badge submission, reflection and feedback
• Genre badge submission, reflection and feedback

To earn each badge you complete every required challenge with excellence and take part in the Festival.
